Spotlight On: First Commonwealth Bank of Prestonsburg Celebrates 100th Anniversary
Established in 1904, First Commonwealth Bank celebrated its landmark 100th birthday on June 9, 2004 with a press conference and reception. In 2004, few locally-owned businesses can dream of serving customers for a century. The bank’s long-standing success is based on a legacy of excellent customer service, strong employee relations and dedication to the surrounding communities.
First Commonwealth Bank opened for business on June 8, 1904 with the support of 22 original shareholders throughout Floyd County who funded the start-up of the bank. Among those original shareholders was Beriah M. Spurlock, uncle of former Bank President Burl Spurlock. Spurlock’s eldest son, Burl Wells Spurlock became president and CEO in 1976 and served as such until 2000 when Greg Wilson took over. Burl Wells Spurlock still serves First Commonwealth Bank as chairman of the board.
“First Commonwealth Bank is more than just a business to me. The bank is part of my family history, my father’s legacy and my own personal history,” Spurlock stated. “Prestonsburg, Floyd County and the surrounding communities mean everything to me. This area is where my brothers, my sister and I grew up, and it is where I later raised my own son. Though the times and the area have changed over the years, First Commonwealth Bank has been the one constant entity throughout my life. It has been my honor and privilege to serve my hometown and home county at our bank.”
